GOOD BYE TURNPIKE ROAD

Dear Friends,

This past year has brought tremendous change to my life. After 16 years based in the US, I found myself craving to reconnect more fully with my roots and to be truly independent as an artist. In January of 2007, I celebrated the opening of my own studio, monohanako, in Karatsu Japan.

In the midst of this exciting new beginning, I realize that I did not arrive at this point alone. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Malcolm Wright for the enormous generosity and kindness of heart he showed me. For five years, he shared his knowledge and resources with me and allowed me to work in his studio at Turnpike Road Pottery. As a mentor, he supported me with the guidance and freedom I needed to developed my own artistic voice and deepen my commitment to pottery. It was an experience that few young artists are fortunate enough to find.

I am also grateful to all of you who have supported me over the last several years while I was based in New England.

Sincerely,
Hanako Nakazato
